Rec&Ed is saddened to announce the closure of the tuition preschool program at Allen and Thurston Elementary schools.
While the preschools featured dedicated teachers who prepared children for a successful kindergarten experience, the classrooms have been under-enrolled since the program began in 2006. As a result, Rec&Ed absorbed program deficits for a number of years, including this past school year. Due to budgetary challenges at the district level, Rec&Ed is now managing a tighter budget than ever before. Rec&Ed administration worked with other district administrators starting last December to pursue other options for bringing in students and promoting the program. Unfortunately, these attempts did not lead to higher enrollment for fall 2013, and Rec&Ed faced an even larger projected deficit for 2013-14.
After considering the financial picture of the tuition preschool program, on June 12 the Board of Education voted not to take on the risk of another year of deficit which could potentially impact the district's general fund. This week, Superintendent Green confirmed the decision to close the program.
The Ann Arbor community offers many preschool options for families. The Arbor Web website lists numerous options: http://arborweb.com/cg/t0056.html.
Rec&Ed apologizes for any inconvenience that the closure of the tuition preschool program will cause families within the district.
